“Oh what a shame!” The words on the lips of many when the Gay in the Bay beach party had to be postponed from Sunday 18th Feb for one week. ”Oh what a shame!” The words on the lips of many when they awoke to overcast skies and periods of heavy rain on the morning of 25th Feb. Never the less many of the Bays fabulous people decided to get up and go. Some arrived from as far away as Kaitaia and managed to find their way to TAPUAETAHI BAY with no problem, others from nearby managed to get lost en-route and arrived - better late than never.
The sun really does shine on the righteous and recognizing many such people it shined through at TAPUAETAHI BAY. A light breeze blew the rain clouds away, setting the scene for a beautiful afternoon. The assembled guys and gals spread their rugs and enjoyed their picnics. Then started the Northland Gay Beach Volleyball Championships. Amongst hotly contested challenges the true winners were the wandering muts who insisted on joining there masters on court, trying to break the legs of those watching the ball rather than the wandering dogs. The sea was just beautiful and the only place to cool down after a hard game. An expedition was suggested to the upper reached of the bay. Leaving a Hound/Mut/Dog controller at base camp the intrepid explorers set off. After much frolicking in the waves the party came upon the end of the beach. This was marked by a massive river estuary apparently blocking further exploration. Undeterred however the brave discovers of new worlds waded into the unknown depths of the fast flowing river. Holding their provisions, clothes and equipment essential for exploring above their heads they struggled on. It was a miracle none were washed out into the Pacific Ocean but they all managed the crossing safely. Their reward was an undiscovered bay of fabulous beauty. In its blue waters the intrepid men played, and played until it was time to go home. The return journey and river crossing brought injury on rocks and a confrontation with a Sting Ray. All returned safely to the Hound controller and set about packing up the base camp. We were exhausted with enjoyment, a touch windblown, and slightly singed around the edges (we should have put on that sun screen). As we said our goodbyes we were reminded of those who were stalled by morning rain clouds and on the lips of a few were the words “Oh what a shame!”
