Twas in the bleak mid-winter that some clown suggested it would be a good idea to do a food trail. To add to this foolhardy suggestion a cold wet Wednesday in Paihia (not exactly world renowned for it high night life) was suggested as the best time and place to sample the culinary delights of this Northland ‘mega city’.
Much to the shame of those who anticipated this Gay in the Bay event would be a bit of a damp squib, and sadly for those who really could not attend due to other commitments, the evening proved to be a tasty act of good fellowship and fun.
Meeting at the Toast Bar at 6.00 it was the intention to lubricate the food channel before moving off at 6.45. However everyone was having such good fun catching up on all the news, inclusive of the TV2 documentary on our expanding gay community here in the Bay of Islands, it was 7.30 before the tummy grumbles grew too load to ignore any longer.
A little ramble brought us to the Thai restaurant where many tasty dishes were sampled.
From here it was over to the Blue Water Bistro in Opua for dessert/sweet/pudding/afters**.
It’s a real good job we did not follow the suggestion ‘Why don’t we walk from Paihia to Opua, there’s a nice pathway that runs along the coast?’ We happy gang did not arrive until 8.45 and the restaurant had already stayed open especially awaiting our arrival. It’s a good job we drove there.
Even thought the waiters had all stayed on awaiting our arrival we were warmly welcomed and their friendly service soon produced some very tasty desserts/sweets/puddings/afters**. The white linen tablecloths and candles pitched just the right atmosphere for us all too really appreciate what a great evening it was and what a good way to meet up with our friends in the Bay.
A meander down to Opua wharf finished the evening. We took the opportunity to look at the Canterbury, sadly not looking her former glorious self having been stripped bare before her forthcoming sinking. She will however make a great addition to the wonderful dive sites in our part of the world.
Thank you folks of the Committee for another gay event to remember.
