Firstly your Roving Rainbow Reporter must explain. His informants, spies and counter insurgency experts have failed and the feedback necessary for the production of this balanced and unbiased report has only just come to hand. Now it may come as a surprise to some of you but your Roving Rainbow Reporter is not always at each GITB function. I am as elusive as the Rainbow. You just can’t find the end of the rainbow nor can you find the true person behind these spiritually uplifting and fascinating missives.
Well here goes. The September event on the GITB calendar was for all the girls and boys of the bay to go and play at Tauranga Bay. A long weekend of Fishing and Camping. Now I thought fishing was a true blue all macho male preserve. Out there fighting nature to bring back stories to tell whilst swilling down a beer over the Bar B. Of the big one that got away, or of this massive fish which took hours of toil to land and carve up into slices small enough to carry home. Well the truth of the matter is the girls seem to have had the best results. The prize for the heaviest snapper went to Prof Helen. Hoodie Helen hauled in the biggest fish, and the most unusual fish (No not the chocolate fish being displayed by Garry!!) Hoodie Helen also brought in the mintiest Moment (if you want to know more about this ask Bill.) Angie displayed her undoubted skills by being crowned ‘Hooker of the Bay’. Because you lot do have such dirty minds I know this needs clarification. She hooked the most fish dear!! Joy worked hard but failed to break her virginity at this game. The Boys toiled away to hold up the male end. Ka managed to get a big one named Kawhai and Wayne was happy stroking his hard Gurnard. Julie and Hoodie Helen pulled the Dedicated Fisher Award.
There were 24 registered for the tournament but many more dropped in for an hour, a day, overnight or even more. Shouting encouragement or abuse to the anglers everyone had a great time. Enjoying the first 2 consecutive sunny days in what seems like months and the spectacle put on by the dolphins out in the Bay. Great banter and much food.
At times there seemed to be more dogs than people but that was down to the space Cory was taking up, and those with more than one hound. Don’t ask Donna & Vanessa how their tent pole got broken unless you want your own personal demonstration and I am told you most definitely do not want that!!
Our sympathies go out to Marcus. Our new German boy in town. He was proper poorly throughout the weekend but all credit that he stuck it out and only pulled it back in again to stop the dogs licking it.
A big welcome to the fold of merry pufftah’s goes to Wayne from Hohoura, Elle all the way from Dargaville, and Liz up for the day from that big scary city called Whangarei.
Most of the boys were tucked up in their beds by 9.30 each night but the tough old gals could not stop swapping big fish stories until into the wee small hours. Jan and Anita deserve a big thank you for their organization of the week end which by general consent of opinion was a definite hook on the line for a repeat next year. Maybe then the boys will have found out how to pull a hard one…………in.
